about

"Glyphs for Second System" is the first release by 89.SYM. It consists of on-grid dance tracks with the drums ripped out, field recordings and single takes, cut-up samples, drones, and autonomic melodies pulled from nostalgic harmonic memories and dreams about extraterrestrials.

Recorded and produced in different contexts over the past year, “Glyphs for Second System” is drum-less music centered on keyboard improvisation and a devotion to studio chance.

"Highly enigmatic music box melody and BoC-like synth psychedelia swaddled in tape noise, from 89.SYM - a new name to us, presented by the kshack label behind that ace 504 Aquatic EP. At time of writing search terms for the name and title returns a lesser spotted googlewhack, so your guess is good as ours to 89.SYM’s provenance. If we let the music do the talking, though, we find ourselves melting into a flashback-like reverie between the EP’s flickering melody in ‘Candles’ and choral vignette ‘Arrival’, with mesmerising pieces of cotton candy spun electronics in ‘Children of Space’ leading to a run of genuinely BoC interlude-like wonders in ‘Entanglement Hymn’ and the sun-ripened melody of ‘Flying Dreams’. Whose dream is this? Cos it weirdly feels like we’ve been here before" -- Boomkat
